Davidson and Farrier Family Histories

This is a site for us to upload family histories and pictures of our Davidson and Farrier family ancestors. I have not written most of the histories, although I have put together the timelines. The histories have been gathered from various sources, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of their information.

If you recognize any of these people and have information to add or correct, please post a comment, including your email address if you wish, so we can be in touch. I would love to connect with other descendants of these family members.

Joseph White Pierce
(author unknown)

Born June 5 1805, Middletown, Middlesex Connecticut, USA.

Father: John Pierce. Mother; Abigail Stow.

Married: Amanda Mary Heath, December 16, 1828 in Windsor, Broome County New York.  He was 23 years old.

The lived at Janesseo, Broome County, New York where two children were born.   Elizabeth, January 1829.  She died that same year.  Edwin was born November 27, 1830 and died, August 28, 1832 at 21 months.

Joseph and his wife, Amanda joined the Church [of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] in New York, only a short distance from the birth place of Mormonism.   In April 1830 Joseph Smith made his first visit to Colesville, Broome County New York where several public meetings were held.   Later other visits were made.  No doubt, this is where they heard the Gospel from the lips of the prophet and joined the church sometime between then and 1832.

They followed the Church to Kirtland, Ohio in 1832, where he helped build the Kirtland Temple.
Mary Adeline, who married William Ballard, born 22 November 1833 at Niagara, New York.   Catherine Amanda, born 18 February 1836, died 1 March 1837, at  13 months of age, Kirtland, Ohio.
They lived in Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri.   Their fifth child, Joseph Henry was born here on 17 January 1838 and died 18 of February one month later.  Four of their first five children died before reaching the age of two.

January 29, 1839 in Far West, Missouri, Joseph White Pierce subscribed his name, along with many others, to pledge their available property to be disposed of by a committee, for the purpose of assisting the worthy poor and destitute to remove from the state in compliance with the order expelling them from the state of Missouri. (History of the Church Volume III pages 250 to 254.)

In Nauvoo, they lived in the same house as Hyrum Smith and knew and associated with the prophet Joseph Smith.  Amanda Mary Heath Pierce stated that, the death of the prophet gave her a very deep grief.
While in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, there were three children born.  Roxey Abigail, May 24, 1840.  She married John McRae, a brother to my grandmother, Mary Jane McRae.  George, born October 17, 1842 died November 11, 1842 at less than a month. Isaac Riley was born July 13, 1844, about two weeks after the prophet Joseph Smith was killed in Carthage Jail.  He was my grandfather.

They crossed the Mississippi on the ice as they were driven from Nauvoo.

Adelia Delialah, their ninth child was born January 13, 1847, somewhere in Iowa.   She married Al Workman.  She later married William Edger French and they moved to Canada and have a large posterity in that area.  Lucy Jane, their tenth child, was born March 22, 1850 at Silver Creek, Iowa.  She died February 18, 1851. She was only ten months old.

Note: silver creek township is located on the south boundary of Pottawattamie County, about midway between the east and west boundary. This may have been the place of birth.

Julia Ann Menetta, their 11th child was born at Kanesville, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, August 3, 1852.  She married John Morgan Hughes.

The name of Kanesville was later changed to Council Bluffs.  They spent several years in this area, mostly at Kanesville.  Joseph White Pierce and his family followed the Church on all of its moves westward.  They were driven from five different homes.

They crossed the plains in 1853.

They settled in Salt Lake City, at 5th South and 9th East.  (922 E. 500 S.)  They owned about 2 1/2 acres. They hauled timber and wood from the canyons and farmed and cleared land.  They homesteaded a ranch at the foot of Little Mountain, on the old Emigrant Trail in Emigration Canyon.  They also raised stock and farmed in the summer and spent winters in Salt Lake City.

Joseph White Pierce died April 2, 1888 at Salt Lake City, Utah. He was 82.

Amanda Mary Heath, 1810-1902

  • Born:  15 January 1810 in Windsor, Broome, New York
  • Died:  22 January 1902 in Salem, Utah, Utah
  • Parents:  Isaac Heath and Roxienne Heath
  • Spouse:  Joseph White Pierce (md. 16 December 1828 in Broome County, New York)
  • Children:  Elizabeth Pierce, Edwin Pierce, Mary Adeline Pierce, Catherine Amanda Pierce, Joseph Henry Pierce, Roxey or Roxie Abigail Pierce, George Pierce, Isaac Riley Pierce, Adelia Delilah Pierce, Lucy Jane Pierce, Julia Ann Menetta Pierce

History of Amanda Mary Heath Pierce
(Written by Madge Pierce as told to her by Martha Pierce Christensen.)

Amanda Mary Heath, was born in Broome County, New York, January 11, 18100.  She was the daughter of Isaac Heath and Roxienne Heath. Her mother died when she was very young. Very shortly after the death of her mother, her father passed away also, leaving her an orphan. She was reared by an uncle.

At an early age she married Joseph White Pierce of Middleton, Connecticut. She always said that he was of very fine people, above average in intelligence, gentlemanly and refined.

They joined the church [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] in New York, living only a short distance from the "Birthplace of Mormonism." In April 1830, Joseph Smith made his first visit to Colesville, Broome County, New York. Several public meetings were held. In attendance were many friends and strangers. Later other visits were made to this section. Undoubtedly this is where she and her husband heard the Gospel from the lips of the Prophet and accepted it. They followed the Church in all of its moves westward. She often told how they were driving from five different homes.

Her husband helped build the Kirtland Temple. In Kirtland food was very scarce, and Amanda Mary, along with other women were charged with the responsibility of providing food for the temple workers.
They followed the Church in its westward move to Missouri, then to Nauvoo, Illinois. In Nauvoo, she and her husband lived in the same house as did the Hyrum Smith family. They knew and associated with the Prophet Joseph Smith. She often told about hearing the Prophet's funeral sermon, and how deeply his death grieved her. Two weeks after the martyrdom of the Prophet and Hyrum Smith, her son, Isaac Riley Pierce was born at Nauvoo, Illinois.

At the time the Saints were driven from Nauvoo, they had many provisions with them. She, Amanda Mary Heath, very courageously stood up for her rights and did not allow the angry mob to rob them of their provisions. At the time the Saints left Nauvoo, she and her family crossed the Mississippi River on the ice. She carried with her a clock about two feel tall and approximately 20 inches wide. This clock, which still runs is now owned by her grand-daughter, Martha Pierce Christensen, and is at present in the Daughter's of the Pioneers Relic Hall in Salem, Utah.

Leaving Nauvoo, she and her family spent several years at Winter Quarters, Iowa. They arrived in Utah in 1853 via covered wagon. They settled in the tenth Ward in Salt Lake City. They owned about two and one half acres on land (NE Quarter) at 9th East and 5th South. They also homesteaded a farm in Emigration Canyon. In the summer they lived on the farm and moved to town in the winter. The old monument honoring the entrance of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley was located on their farm.

Amanda Mary Heath Pierce, served in the Presidency of the 10th Ward Relief Society for many years. She was the mother of eleven children, 7 girls and 4 boys. Only five of her children lived to cross the plains, four girls and 1 boy, Isaac Riley Pierce.

She lived to be 92 years of age. She died January 23, 1902.
